I. General Information
Welcome to English 1/ English 1 Honors. This is a writing, language, and literature course that will help you learn to communicate more effectively and understand written material. You need to come in to class prepared to work every day as we have many things to accomplish this year. Guidelines for this course are outlined on the following pages. Be sure to read each section carefully and to be aware of all rules and procedures. This will be an enjoyable class if you abide by the guidelines set.
II. Classroom Procedures
• Come in the classroom politely, prepared, & ready to learn
• Check the board to see what activities will occur in class and if you need to start on anything, like a warm-up
• If absent, please check my class website for missing assignments
• Sit in assigned seat and begin on daily warm-up
• Turn-in assignments to the assigned box.
III. Tardy Policy
The student must be clearly in the classroom when the tardy bell rings. The student will be marked tardy otherwise. Excessive tardiness warrants disciplinary action (referral). Please see student handbook.
IV. Attendance
All students are encouraged to attend school daily. If you know that you will be absent, please check the teacher’s website for daily assignments. It is your responsibility to get and have missed assignments turned in a timely manner (see student handbook). If a scheduled quiz or test is missed, upon returning to the class the student should ask for a CAT Pass to complete it during CAT period. If there is an assignment due, then the student must turn-in the assignment upon returning to class. If the assignment due on the day of the students’ absence is a long term project given two or more weeks in advanced, then that assignment is still due on that day. The student must email the assignment by the end of the class period or find some way to get the assignment to the teacher. If any student who misses class due to PASS, ISS, or a school activity, the student is still responsible for work that was completed in class the day of their absence.
V. Grading Policy
The policy for averaging nine-week grades in English I (as set by the district) is as follows:
Quizzes/ Classwork=45%
Tests/Projects= 55%
Any classwork that was not completed during class becomes the student’s responsibility to finish and have prepared by the next class.
Late Work: Due to the nature in which I collect classwork, each student will have approximately 1 week including a weekend to complete assignments we are working on in class. Assignments are considered late if not turned in at the time the teacher requests it. Any work turn in after it is collected will be considered late. This is to deter students from sitting in class and completing assignments instead of participating on current tasks. If you are absent on the due date of a long-term project, it is still due on the due date and considered late if not turned in on the due date.
Daily Classwork Late Work: is accepted for 75% of the earned grade. The work must be completed in its entirety before it is handed in to receive late credit. I will only accept work up to 2 days late.
VI. Leaving the Classroom
It is important for students to be in the classroom at all times. All errands should be handled before or after school, or during lunch. If a student has an issue, student services or the guidance office will issue a pass and send for them. Be polite, if you need to go to the restroom or nurse, raise your hand. Do not ask to go to the restroom while the teacher is instructing.
VII. Classroom Supplies
o It is required that each student have the following for class every day.
o Notebook Paper- Paper torn out of a spiral with fringe will not be accepted.
o Blue or Black Ink Pen – For formal writing assignments
o Highlighter
o Binder w/ 3 dividers
o *Note: throughout the year the student may need additional supplies to complete projects.
** Kleenex and extra notebook paper would be greatly appreciated.
XI. Extra Credit
I do not issue extra credit…EVER, so please don’t ask.
XII. Required Reading
Through the year we will be reading novels, short stories, & poems, both in fiction and non-fiction. Occasionally, reading will be assigned for homework and each student is expected to have the reading completed when he or she returns to class. Reading at home allows optimum instruction time in the classroom.
XIII. Website
Each teacher has a website that parents and students may visit anytime. The websites include lesson plans, daily handouts, daily notes, etc. Please visit the website if your student is absent to collect missed assignments or if student has lost information. If the student does not have internet access at home, the student may use the library before school, during lunch or after school. I will try to update their website at the beginning of each week when possible.
XIV. Teacher Contact/E-mail
Each teacher has an e-mail; however, just like phone calls, we are not always able to get to them until our planning period or after school. I will return your e-mail as soon as possible. E-mail is preferred as I have the greatest access to my email account even while with students.
All parents are encouraged to create a Family Access account to monitor their student’s grades, test scores and other activities.
